MediaVaultHD
MediaVaultHD Navigation Troubleshooting problems and finding solutions for MediaVaultHD
When the computer spontaneously "looses" an external hard drive, but it reappears after disconnecting and reconnecting the USB, the problem is usually a setting in your Windows Hardware Device Manager which automatically turns off USB devices in order to reduce power consumption. This feature must be disabled to ensure uninterrupted use of your MVHD. The following steps assume you use Windows XP. If you have a different version of Windows the steps to opening your Device Manager may be different. If you have another operating system, refer to your computer documentation for assistance. Follow these steps to change the appropriate settings:
Windows XP Start Button

Step 1: Start

Click the Windows START button.
Select Control Panel

Step 2: Control Panel

Select CONTROL PANEL from the Start menu.
System Icon in the Control Panel

Step 3: System Icon

Double-Click the SYSTEM icon inside the Control Panel dialog.
Hardware Tab

Step 4: Hardware Tab

Click on the HARDWARE tab at the top of the System dialog.
Device Manager Button

Step 5: Device Manager

Click the DEVICE MANAGER button.
USB Controllers

Step 6 - USB Controllers

Double-Click UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS.
USB Root Hub

Step 7 - USB Root Hub

Right-Click the first USB ROOT HUB entry. Several USB ROOT HUB entries should be listed. You may safely repeat the remaining steps for every USB ROOT HUB entry. The power conserved by the automatic USB power saving feature is very slight. By turning off power management at all ports you ensure protection from the original problem if you ever change which devices are plugged into which USB ports.
Select Properties

Step 8 - Properties

Select PROPERTIES from the right-click menu.
Select Properties

Step 9 - Power Tab (Optional Step)

If you want to know what is connected to the selected root hub: select the POWER tab.
Select Properties

Step 10 - Attached Devices Info (Optional Step)

This is for informational purposes only: Under the POWER tab you will see an area labelled ATTACHED DEVICES. If item USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE is listed here this is an external memory device. If you have no other USB memory devices attached to your computer then this must be (one of) your MVHD external hard drive. It is strongly recommended that you turn off power conservation for all mass storage devices whether they are MVHD drives or not (It is safe to turn off power management for all USB devices). If no USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE is listed you may, however, return to Step 7 and go to the next USB ROOT HUB.
Select Properties

Step 11 - Power Management Tab

Select the POWER MANAGEMENT TAB.

Step 12 - Disable Power Management

Uncheck the box marked ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO TURN OFF THIS DEVICE TO SAVE POWER.
Uncheck Power Save Mode
OK Button

Step 13 - OK

Click the OK button to save the change.

Step 14 - Repeat 7 - 13

Repeat Steps 7 to 13 for each ROOT HUB listed. Remember: You must turn off power management for all USB MASS STORAGE DEVICEs found using the POWER tab, though it safe to skip steps 9 and 10 and simply turn off power management for all USB ROOT HUBs.
This procedure should effectively eliminate any further problems of this kind.
